Residential Treatment
What Is Residential Treatment?
Residential treatment provides 24-hour structured care in a live-in facility, offering intensive therapeutic programming in a safe environment away from triggers and stressors. It's the most immersive level of care, ideal for building a strong recovery foundation.
According to the National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA), residential treatment is most appropriate for individuals with moderate to severe substance use disorders, co-occurring mental health conditions, limited social support, or environments that are not conducive to recovery. Research consistently shows that longer treatment duration correlates with better outcomes—NIDA recommends at least 90 days of treatment for optimal results.
SAMHSA's Treatment Episode Data Set (TEDS) indicates that individuals who complete residential treatment are 4-5 times more likely to maintain sobriety at one year compared to those who receive only brief intervention or outpatient care. The combination of intensive therapy, peer support, skill-building, and removal from triggering environments creates powerful conditions for transformation.
Who Is Residential Treatment Right For?
Our residential program serves individuals who meet ASAM criteria for Level 3.1 (Clinically Managed Low-Intensity) or 3.5 (Clinically Managed High-Intensity) residential services, including those who:
- Have completed medical detox and are medically stable
- Require 24-hour structure and support to maintain abstinence
- Have co-occurring mental health disorders requiring integrated treatment
- Live in environments with high relapse risk (active users, triggers, lack of support)
- Have limited motivation or readiness for change requiring intensive engagement
- Have attempted outpatient treatment without success
- Need time away from life stressors to focus entirely on recovery
- Benefit from peer community and social learning environment
The Power of Immersion
Residential treatment removes you from the people, places, and circumstances associated with active addiction. This separation allows your brain to begin healing from the neurological changes caused by chronic substance use, while intensive therapy addresses the psychological, emotional, and behavioral aspects of addiction. You're not just stopping substance use—you're learning an entirely new way of living.

Weekend Programming
Weekends include therapeutic recreation activities (beach outings, nature hikes, community service), alumni events, family visitation, extended individual therapy sessions, and 12-step meetings. While less structured than weekdays, weekends provide opportunities to practice recovery skills in varied settings.
Therapeutic Approaches
We utilize proven therapies backed by decades of addiction treatment research.
Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT)
Identifies and modifies negative thought patterns and behaviors that contribute to substance use. CBT helps you recognize triggers, challenge irrational beliefs, and develop healthier coping strategies. Meta-analyses show CBT reduces relapse rates by 50-60%.
Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT)
Teaches four skill sets: mindfulness (staying present), distress tolerance (managing crisis without substances), emotional regulation (understanding and modulating emotions), and interpersonal effectiveness (healthy communication). Particularly effective for those with co-occurring mood disorders.
Motivational Interviewing (MI)
Client-centered approach that enhances intrinsic motivation for change by exploring ambivalence, affirming strengths, and supporting self-efficacy. Research shows MI significantly improves treatment engagement and outcomes.
Trauma-Focused Therapy
Addresses underlying trauma (childhood abuse, PTSD, adverse experiences) that often fuels addiction. Includes EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing), trauma-focused CBT, and somatic experiencing to process traumatic memories safely.
12-Step Facilitation
Introduces principles of 12-step recovery (AA, NA, etc.) and facilitates connection to mutual support groups. Studies show 12-step involvement correlates with higher rates of sustained abstinence and larger recovery support networks.
Family Systems Therapy
Involves family members to improve communication, heal relationships, address codependency, and build a supportive home environment. Addiction affects entire family systems—recovery involves healing these relationships.
Experiential Therapy
Engages creative and physical activities (art, music, equine therapy, adventure therapy) to access emotions, build confidence, and practice healthy expression. Particularly effective for those who struggle with traditional talk therapy.
Relapse Prevention Training
Systematic approach to identifying high-risk situations, developing coping strategies, creating emergency plans, and building recovery lifestyle. Based on Marlatt and Gordon's research showing relapse prevention reduces return to use by 40-50%.
Dual Diagnosis Care
Approximately 50% of individuals with substance use disorders also have co-occurring mental health conditions (SAMHSA). Depression, anxiety, PTSD, bipolar disorder, and other conditions often contribute to substance use and complicate recovery.
At RECO Health, all residential clients receive comprehensive psychiatric evaluation and integrated dual diagnosis treatment when indicated. Our team includes psychiatrists, psychiatric nurse practitioners, and therapists trained in evidence-based treatments for co-occurring disorders.
Integrated services include:
- Psychiatric evaluation and diagnosis
- Medication management when appropriate
- Specialized therapy for mental health conditions
- Coordinated treatment planning
- Ongoing monitoring and adjustment

Residential Treatment FAQs
Our residential program typically lasts 30-90 days, with the optimal length determined by individual needs and progress. Research from NIDA shows that treatment lasting at least 90 days produces significantly better outcomes than shorter stays. We work with each client to determine the appropriate length of stay based on ASAM criteria, clinical progress, and insurance coverage.
Days are structured with individual therapy, group therapy, educational workshops, recreational activities, meals, 12-step meetings, and personal time. A typical day includes: wake-up at 7:00 AM, breakfast, morning meditation/yoga, process group, individual therapy, lunch, educational workshop, experiential therapy, dinner, evening 12-step meeting, and lights out at 11:00 PM. Weekends include therapeutic recreation and alumni activities.
Yes, with some guidelines to protect your recovery focus. After an initial blackout period (typically 3-7 days), you may have supervised phone calls and visits during designated hours. Family involvement is encouraged through family therapy sessions, educational workshops, and visiting hours. Policies are designed to balance connection with loved ones and immersion in the recovery process.
Most clients transition to our Partial Hospitalization Program (PHP) or Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP) to continue therapy while gradually reintegrating into daily life. We create a comprehensive aftercare plan including outpatient therapy, 12-step involvement, sober living referrals, and alumni support. This continuum of care approach significantly reduces relapse risk.
Yes. For clients with opioid use disorder, we offer medication-assisted treatment with buprenorphine (Suboxone) or naltrexone (Vivitrol) as part of comprehensive treatment. For alcohol use disorder, we may prescribe naltrexone, acamprosate, or disulfiram. All medications are prescribed and monitored by our addiction medicine physicians and integrated with behavioral therapies.
