Treatment Continuum
Levels of Care
From medical detox to independent sober living, understand every stage of the treatment continuum and find the right level of care for your recovery journey.
The Step-Down Model
Effective treatment follows a continuum from the most intensive level of care to progressively more independent levels. This step-down approach allows individuals to build skills and confidence gradually, reducing the risk of relapse while fostering long-term recovery.
Medical Detox
Medical detoxification is the process of safely managing withdrawal symptoms under 24/7 medical supervision. This is often the essential first step for individuals with physical dependence on alcohol, opioids, benzodiazepines, or other substances.
3-10 days
24/7 medical facility
Physical dependence requiring medical management
Residential Treatment
Residential treatment provides 24/7 structured living in a therapeutic environment. Patients participate in intensive daily programming including individual therapy, group sessions, family programming, and experiential activities while residing on-site.
30-90 days
24/7 therapeutic residence
Individuals needing immersive, structured treatment
Partial Hospitalization Program (PHP)
PHP provides 5 or more hours of structured therapeutic programming per day, 5 days per week, while allowing patients to reside off-site in sober living or at home. This level bridges the gap between residential treatment and outpatient care.
2-6 weeks
Day program, 5+ hours daily
Step-down from residential or high-structure outpatient need
Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP)
IOP provides 3 or more hours of programming, 3-5 days per week. This level allows individuals to maintain work, school, or family responsibilities while continuing to receive structured clinical support and therapeutic care.
4-12 weeks
3+ hours, 3-5 days per week
Continued support while balancing daily responsibilities
Outpatient Treatment
Outpatient treatment consists of individual therapy, group sessions, and psychiatric appointments on a flexible schedule. This level provides ongoing clinical support for individuals who have progressed through more intensive levels of care or who need lighter-touch ongoing support.
Ongoing, as needed
1-3 sessions per week
Relapse prevention and maintenance support
Sober Living
Sober living residences provide a structured, substance-free living environment that bridges the gap between treatment and fully independent life. Residents follow house rules, participate in community activities, and practice the recovery skills they have learned in treatment.
30 days to 12+ months
Structured residential community
Transitional support while rebuilding independent living
